Design a Celtic Tree of Life Tattoo
No matter how fanciful Celtic tree of life tattoos get, they have three basic elements in common. First, each design needs strong roots that symbolically reach deep into the ground. Second, the imagery needs a strong trunk. Third, multiple branches reach toward the heavens. These are the main elements of the design, but you can be as creative as you want with the details.
Knot Work
Knots are a major component of Celtic designs, and the tree of life is no exception. In many tattoos, the branches and the roots entwine around each other to form an unbroken ring of knots that frames the entire work of art. In other designs, the roots and branches form separate bundles of knots connected only by a twisted trunk. A knot work tree is the classic representation of this design.
Creatures
The Celts held that there were seven forms of life, and any or all can be incorporated somewhere within the tree to create a very vivid design.
These include:
* People
* Plants
* Birds
* Fish
* Reptiles
* Insects
* All other animals
So, how can these images enhance your tat design? Imagine a gnarled trunk that, on closer inspection, reveals the withered face of a man or woman. The leaves of the tree might also include birds on the wing. How about writhing snakes amongst the roots of the tree? As you can imagine, there's no shortage of combinations you can use to make your tree of life tattoo different from any other you've ever seen.
Color
When you're working with a knot work tattoo design, it's often best to stick with a single color in light and dark values so you don't loose the essence of the knots themselves. However, you might want to consider going the fantasy route and make use of a rainbow of colors in your design. This would look especially good if you decide you really do want to incorporate creatures and other enhancements to your basic tree.
Size
Since the tree of life tattoo literally cries out for details, it usually winds up being a bigger piece than the average tattoo. This makes it a good candidate for a back or chest mural so you can take advantage of the larger canvas. That said, it is possible to create a simpler and therefore smaller design that will fit on an upper arm or ankle.

Symbolism - Tree Of Life Tattoos
In general, the Tree of Life symbolizes the connection between the heavens and the earth. This is not surprising, since trees in general die off in the winter and flower in the spring. Plus, many have seeds which lead to new growth. This makes trees the ideal symbol for religious imagery, including birth, rebirth, death, and resurrection. The tree appears in most Near East creation stories. In many stories, the earth is viewed as flat, and the heavens are supported by the branches of a cosmic tree.
"To Babylonians, the tree was found in the Garden of Paradise, while to the Zoroastrians, the tree was said to be the home of the mythical Phoenix."
Just what kind of a tree is the Tree of Life? Well, that depends on who you ask. For much of the Classical world, it is an oak tree, though ancient Egyptians claimed it was a sycamore or a form of date palm. It is also a palm tree in Assyrian stories, but a cedar in the legends of Native American Indians. In Norse mythology, the tree - known as Yggdrasil - is an ash. The tree has also been associated with olives, figs, and grapes.
Others claim it is the tree of life depicted in the Jewish symbol of Kabbalah, meaning "ancient lore" or "received wisdom." The diagram, which any English teacher would tell you looks like a "tree diagram," shows the interconnections between the ten Sephiroth, or emanations, of God, e.g. strength, love. Some argue that the Tree of Life mythology gave rise to the image and lessons of the kabbalistic tree; others say that people accidentally equate it with the tree simply because of the shape of the diagram. As for tattoo art, we suggest that, if you want to represent the Kabbalah specifically, use the Judaic diagram, and not just any old tree. If you want to represent a tree of life in general to show the connections between heaven and earth, then you can be more flexible and creative in your choices when designing your tree of life tattoo.

Tree of Life Tattoos
It may well surprise you to find out that the search engines are one of the worst places to begin your search for that perfect Celtic tree of life tattoo design. This may well seem counter-intuitive, because if you are anything like me you will have become practically dependant on search engines for every question you may have. The reason that they aren’t so great for searching for tattoo designs is because they were built for searching for information, and have no clue whether a tattoo design is original, interesting or high quality.
If you want proof of this, simply type Celtic Tree of Life Tattoo into any search engine and you will be presented with heaps of information about the history of them, how popular they are, where you can get one but very few actual designs. And even the ones that you do get will most likely be rubbish cookie cutter designs that have been floating around the internet for years and already been tattooed on millions of people.
I don’t know about you but this definitely is not what getting a tattoo is all about for me. I want something original, creative and interesting. Something that expresses my personality.
So where can you find a Celtic Tree of Life Tattoo that will do all of this for you?
It is actually surprisingly simple once you know where to look. It took me a while to discover this, but the best place to find great tattoo artwork online is in the tattoo forums. This is because lots of professional tattoo artists use these forums and like to upload their latest designs to get other users opinions. This is great for us because it means that we can get the absolute freshest tattoo designs, by professional tattoo artists before anyone else gets anywhere near them!
And wait there is more! If you go to the archive section of some of these forums you will find that they have a section which gives you links to some of the large online tattoo artwork galleries that you wont find anywhere else. This is where you will find the real gems and you are guaranteed to find loads of awesome Celtic Tree of Life tattoo designs. These galleries are constantly updated with new artwork and none of it shows up in the search engines so you won’t be inking yourself with the same thing as everyone else.
